The 109 Practical Applications of Heavy Civil Construction is a fundamental construction education and training course that focuses on understanding heavy civil construction methods, procedures and techniques.

This includes site preparation and grading, excavation, backfill, compaction, trenching, paving, and dewatering. Discussions on the proper methods of determining earthwork quantities, estimating civil construction costs and safety implications will take place throughout the course to further advance students’ understanding of the course material as they study building and construction online

SELF-PACED

A self paced course can be started at any time. You must complete the course within 10 weeks but you can work through the course as quickly as you like.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By the end of this construction education and training program, you will:

Understand standard terminology and units of measurement used in heavy construction

Explain the properties of civil construction materials

Perform basic quantity take-offs and estimating for heavy civil construction

Calculate quantities and costs for site work, utilities and paving

Distinguish between asphalt and concrete paving methods and materials

Develop an awareness of construction safety related to earthmoving operations

Explain and discuss a variety of horizontal drilling and tunneling systems

Understand trench safety requirements and the proper use of trench boxes

Understand the methods, procedures and processes of heavy civil construction

CLASS ORGANIZATION & GRADING

It is important that you keep up with the class and do not fall behind. Students who are deliberate and diligent with their studies will have an easier time achieving success in any course in the construction certificate programs or any building construction class in which you register.

Course modules will be made available to students on Sunday of each week. Class work must be completed before the following Monday. Students will not be able to work ahead of the class but the reading assignments will be made available in advance. Modules will become available on dates posted on the course calendar.

GRADING POLICIES

Graded assignments will consist of one homework, one quiz and participation in at least two class discussions for each module to study construction and building online. Each quiz will count 10 points, each homework 10 points, and class discussions will count 10 points per module. Students should provide at least 3 contributions to the class discussions each week to gain the maximum points.

Grades will be posted on a weekly basis. You will have full access to your grade sheet and can keep track of how you are doing at all times in this construction education and training program. Your overall grade in the course will be determined by the total number of points you have accumulated on quizzes and assignments.

You will be given more information about the grading and other course matters in the Orientation Module of this construction education and training program.

The grading scale is as follows:

A

270 to 300 points

B

240 to 269 points

C

210 to 239 points

D

180 to 209 points

F

Anything less will be considered an unauthorized withdrawal from the course
