"Whether estimating or handling live projects, equipment is always part of the pie. Information is always valuable, even if it isn’t directly useful; I may not need to dig a ditch and run pipe when estimating structural steel, but knowing how that task is done and its effect(s) on work that follows it can help in the sequencing of tasks, as well as providing a buffer for mobilization and time-on-task, during the estimating process."
"At work, when I receive change orders for site work extras, I have found myself spending more time analyzing the type of equipment that the subcontractors are using. I find myself consulting more with my team to determine if a more efficient piece of equipment would have been a better choice. When reviewing the number of hours they claim to have spent completing the work, if it seems excessive, I question if there were any site conditions that would have led to the potentially excessive time claimed."

"Learning more about Stormwater runoff and ways to mitigate this was an important topic, and the outer envelope and unconditioned spaces taught me the most from a practical standpoint, it will be the most useful for me personally as I continue with my home renovation project. I thought I was fairly knowledgeable about sustainability and how to lessen my own carbon footprint, but I learned that I have a long way to go. Knowing the possibilities is helpful in both my professional and personal life and that going green is not an all or nothing approach - every little change has an impact and finding ways to incorporate more sustainable options should always be part of the consideration."
"My favorite unit was 4, where we learned about daylighting and borrowed light. I know how much I love working in a place with windows and skylights, but to have a system that teaches how to bring daylight in, and help spread it throughout an office, is amazing. I learned that you can have a well-lit space using natural light, and still be well-insulated, and that reducing the use of artificial light can save money and increase a healthy environment. After gaining the knowledge of how to make that happen I can help efficiently redesign my admin office space (I have been assigned to that committee). "
